When winter arrives, we dream of light, airy boho fashion. It’s an aesthetic that seems like it’s been around for decades, but is actually quite new.
Bohemian Chic Fashion Styles
The boho-chic look has a timelessness that makes it always fashionable and versatile enough to always look fresh. It also stands out as a type of alternative fashion style that is quite well accepted by the mainstream despite representing a nomadic lifestyle and rejection of norms.
Types Of Fashion Styles: Ultimate Guide
Boho fashion is a style inspired by the hippie fashion of the 1960s and 1970s, favoring natural fabrics and materials, flowing silhouettes, and ethnic motifs (especially in the form of prints and knitwear) from a wide range of cultures.
Boho fashion is like a free person who travels a lot and maybe buys their clothes from artisans in the markets and fairs they visit. For this reason, boho fashion is not minimalist, although you can be very careful: it allows for high-contrast combinations and many accessories.
The good thing about boho-chic fashion is that it adapts to the trends and silhouettes of its time while maintaining a certain airiness, so while the boho-chic of 2003 featured a lot of low-waisted jeans, the boho-chic of 2019 embraces it. Jeans instead of high-waisted vintage jeans.
It was in the early 2000s when people really started talking about boho or boho-chic as a fashion style. The term boho, short for bohemian, is obviously older.

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, bohemian was originally a term for gypsies in France who were mistakenly thought to be from Bohemia. Soon, however, the term was increasingly applied to free but poor artists who often found themselves living a lifestyle that, at least economically, was indistinguishable from that of the highly marginalized Roma.
There are basically three elements that together describe a member of the bohemian subculture since the mid-19th century: creative activity (music, art, writing, or journalism, usually), rejection of social mores, and poverty. Constant travel (often due to economic necessity) and political discord often went hand in hand with the bohemian lifestyle. Puccini’s opera La bohème tells the story of a group of bohemians living in poverty in the Latin Quarter of Paris. Over the years, the term spread to all major European cities and even made its way to the US and was occasionally used in various countercultures.
In the 1960s, the hippie movement became a major counterculture, and it’s easy to see it as an extension of the bohemian subculture that existed in previous decades, with the same values and a similar lifestyle. The hippie movement is notable because it also included a very specific fashion style that greatly influenced the modern boho aesthetic.
The Fashion Encyclopedia describes their style as ethnic dresses and old-fashioned outfits, as well as “headbands, floppy hats, wrap scarves and beads with blue jeans or bell bottoms and tie-dyed shirts.”
Boho Chic Outfit
Although the spirit of the hippie movement continued in the punk subculture, aesthetically boho-chic fashion is a more direct descendant. This style first appeared in the early 2000s and is closely associated with celebrities such as Sienna Miller, Nicole Richie (not to mention her stylist Rachel Zoe) and Kate Moss. It’s hard not to associate the style with music festival culture like Glastonbury Music Festival and, more recently, Coachella.
Since the mid-2000s, certain boho-chic elements have come and gone, but because the aesthetic has always had an element of whimsy and free spirit, it has also been able to transcend mainstream fashion trends. At the same time, however, it lost some of the countercultural edge and political ideals that the early bohemian and hippie movements had in abundance.
First, let’s talk about boho fashion colors and prints. Neutrals in a boho wardrobe are usually earth tones: browns, tops, creams and faded denim blues. However, there is plenty of room for colour, with bohemian prints making a strong statement. Florals, geometric patterns and paisley patterns are very pleasant, and for winters, knitted knits and loose knits are ideal.
Basic clothing includes maxi dresses, short, flowy dresses, and loose blouses and button-downs, such as linen and raw cotton. Raw denim is also fair game. Fluid skirts and light or distressed jeans. If you’re feeling daring, you can absolutely mix and match a printed top and pants, though it’s usually safer to just stick with one printed piece. If your outfit is completely neutral, you can add a printed scarf to add color and movement.
All You Wanted To Know About Bohemian Style
In addition to scarves, there are many other places to decorate a boho-fashionable wardrobe: a sun hat, vests (which will be huge in 2020), sandals made of natural materials or espadrilles, sophisticated boots in earth tones, bags boho and bucket. Styles and layers of hanging jewelry that can be made from a variety of metals as well as wood and fabric.
The words “natural” and “flow” should also come to boho-chic hairstyles. Hair should be dyed so that it is loosely wavy or curly, occasionally messy or thick braids. Those who follow the boho style usually keep their makeup very natural, using bronzer to provide a sun-protective effect.

Bohemian style is much more than just a fashion trend. It is a true culture that brings with it a very specific ideology and complex history. Although it is closely associated with the hippie fashion of the 60s and 70s, bohemian fashion is part of mainstream culture today. But the fact is that boho fashion actually began as a counterculture in the 19th century. Today, the variety of boho clothing and accessories makes this style a true phenomenon that follows the lines of casual and relaxed fashion, with its loose clothing, casual accessories and overall mix of artistic and creative elements.
Fashion under the bohemian label represents an emerging lifestyle ideology: an alternative to the traditional way of dressing combined with an equally alternative and more free lifestyle and social stance against everything from materialism to societal restrictions.
